Optical test materials

• Physical charts
  The charts below cover a range of resolutions. A rule of thumb that seems consistent is that cost is about $1 per line per mm max on the chart. So a chart going to 500 lines/mm will cost around $500.
  • SPI tests many things including resolution.
  • Applied Image, Inc. Tons of charts on glass slides for testing all kinds of optics.
  • Edmund Optics the standard USAF chart on glass slides. Edmund also sells other testing equipment which includes many other test targets including cheaper charts on paper (which can be used for lower power scopes via projection).
• Software and downloadables
  • Imatest sells software for testing various imaging systems including cameras and printers.
  • Norman Koren has much on photo techniques including a section on lens testing which in turn includes a downloadable test chart and a section of links to other testing resources
  • The USAF 1951 test pattern can be downloaded from many sites in pdf or postscript format. Just Google: USAF lens test chart.
